It didn’t take long for RINO extraordinaire John Bolton to hit the airwaves in full meltdown mode after President-elect Donald Trump announced two of the most unconventional cabinet picks in U.S. history: Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence and Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz for Attorney General. Bolton, who served as Trump’s National Security Advisor before being shown the door, wasted no time trashing the nominations across left-leaning cable networks, calling them the “worst” and “second worst” in American history.
Bolton’s outrage began on NewsNation, where he launched into a tirade, even demanding full FBI investigations into both Gabbard and Gaetz *before* they receive Senate confirmation hearings. “I don’t think either she or Matt Gaetz ought to have a confirmation hearing until they have both had full-field FBI investigations,” Bolton fumed. “I think the Chinese would say, ‘Maybe they are serious,’” he added, parroting the same tired leftist talking points he’s embraced since falling out with Trump.
The accusations against Gabbard were predictable, with Bolton recycling the usual claim that she’s a mouthpiece for “Russian propaganda.” His logic? Gabbard has dared to criticize U.S. foreign policy and question the blank check approach to funding the Ukraine war. “She’s a serious threat to our national security,” Bolton warned, offering no evidence but plenty of bluster. Apparently, in Bolton’s view, anyone not cheerleading endless wars and interventionist policies is suspect.
Bolton didn’t hold back when it came to Matt Gaetz either. Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press, he called the congressman’s nomination “the worst cabinet appointment in American history.” Why? According to Bolton, it’s not just about competence (or lack thereof, as he claimed), but character. “Gaetz is not only totally incompetent for this job, he doesn’t have the character. He is a person of moral turpitude,” Bolton ranted, without elaborating on what exactly disqualifies Gaetz beyond his personal dislike.

On CNN, Bolton took the hyperbole up a notch, comparing Trump’s picks to the infamous story of Roman Emperor Caligula nominating his horse as a consul. “This is like Caligula appointing his horse,” Bolton quipped, trying his best to sound intellectual while regurgitating the same old lines. He called for the Senate to unanimously reject both nominations, declaring that they are “unqualified, unfit professionally, and lacking in moral characteristics.”

But not everyone was buying Bolton’s hysteria. Elon Musk, never one to shy away from controversy, chimed in on X (formerly Twitter), calling Bolton a “staggeringly dumb warmonger” and suggesting that his criticism of Gaetz and Gabbard is a “great sign” they might actually be the right picks.
John Bolton, who is a staggeringly dumb warmonger, being against someone is a great sign!
Gaetz will be great. https://t.co/IKtqnEKOKg

Trump’s choices of Gabbard and Gaetz are unconventional, no doubt. But for Bolton to claim they are the “worst” nominations in history conveniently ignores the flops from the Biden administration, like Pete Buttigieg’s disastrous tenure as Transportation Secretary or Jennifer Granholm’s failed energy policies. The irony of Bolton, the quintessential warmonger, lecturing on “moral characteristics” would be laughable if it weren’t so predictable.
In the end, Bolton’s tirades are less about genuine concerns and more about his own bruised ego. After being unceremoniously booted from Trump’s inner circle, he’s become a go-to figure for leftist media desperate for a “Republican” voice willing to bash Trump. His criticisms of Gabbard and Gaetz might sound harsh, but given Bolton’s track record, it’s almost an endorsement.
