Biden Official Loses It, Covers His Ears Like a Child During Criticism at Hearing

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy sparked controversy on Wednesday during a tense House Oversight Committee hearing when he dramatically covered his ears in response to questioning from Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA). The bizarre moment highlighted mounting frustrations over the financial struggles of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and the perceived shortcomings of DeJoy’s leadership.

The hearing, titled “Oversight of the U.S. Postal Service,” was convened to assess the USPS’s progress under DeJoy’s 10-year “Delivering for America” reform plan. Despite continuing losses and declining service, DeJoy remained defiant, giving himself an “A” for his performance.

“You cannot give yourself that grade,” McCormick shot back, expressing disbelief over DeJoy’s self-assessment given the Postal Service’s ongoing financial woes. DeJoy dismissively replied, “I just did,” before adding, “You’re talking to yourself.” This snide remark and his ear-covering gesture drew sharp criticism, with McCormick accusing him of representing a lack of accountability at the USPS.

“You are responsible for the fall of the Postal Service,” McCormick declared, underscoring the frustration many lawmakers feel about the USPS’s $6.5 billion loss in fiscal year 2023 and projections for similar losses in 2024.

Chairman James Comer (R-KY) noted that despite DeJoy’s reform efforts, financial losses continue to mount. “I give Mr. DeJoy credit for delivering a plan to fix the Postal Service. But the Postal Service is hemorrhaging red ink,” Comer said. “This year’s loss was almost $10 billion. Next year’s loss is projected to be $6.5 billion. When you predicted the Postal Service could break even, did you not foresee some of these other issues?”

DeJoy defended his strategy, insisting that new products and cost-cutting measures would ultimately lead to profitability. “Our drive is to reduce cost and grow revenue,” DeJoy said. “We are introducing new products now to increase revenue… we will decrease our operating costs and increase our revenue. This is the best plan.”

Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) pointed to the need for increased efficiency, referencing upcoming initiatives from the Trump Administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). “There will be lots of conversation about USPS and other matters of government efficiency,” Sessions said. “We need to look at efficiency and hear your ideas, and you hear ours to save money.”

DeJoy responded, “I’m happy to engage in any discussion,” but the contentious atmosphere suggested significant skepticism remains.

The hearing underscored the challenges facing the USPS and the deep divide between DeJoy and Congress over how best to resolve them. As losses pile up and public confidence erodes, it’s clear that patience is wearing thin on Capitol Hill.
