Gavin Newsom Under Official Federal Investigation

Well, would you look at that — Gavin Newsom, the coiffed king of California’s left-wing lunacy, is once again in hot water, and this time it’s not just Republicans calling him out. Nope, now the Department of Homeland Security (yes, the federal government) is kicking open the door to see whether California’s handing out cash to illegal aliens like it’s Oprah’s Favorite Things special: “You get a check! And you get a check!”

The DHS investigation, spearheaded by Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) unit in L.A., is digging into the state’s Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI). This program — funded entirely by California taxpayers — was supposed to help legal non-citizens who are elderly or disabled and can’t get federal SSI because of their immigration status. Sounds reasonable at first glance, right? Except here’s the catch: DHS is now looking into whether illegal aliens — who, let’s be clear, shouldn’t be getting any public assistance — are getting both CAPI and federal SSI benefits. That’s not just sketchy. That’s illegal.

According to a subpoena issued by HSI, they’re demanding the L.A. County Department of Public Social Services hand over a laundry list of records dating back to January 2021. Names, immigration statuses, SSI denials — you name it, they want it. And DHS Secretary Kristi Noem isn’t mincing words. In her own statement, she laid it out: “Radical left politicians in California prioritize illegal aliens over our own citizens.” She’s not wrong.

Let’s just stop and remember: this all traces back to the 1996 Welfare Reform Act, which barred most non-citizens from receiving SSI. In typical California fashion, the state flipped Uncle Sam the bird and created CAPI to keep the money flowing. But now, under President Trump’s second term, the game is changing. Fast.

On April 15, President Trump signed a new memo aimed at stopping illegal aliens from getting Social Security benefits — and what do you know, just weeks later, DHS is on the case in California. Coincidence? Hardly. It’s a clear message to states playing footsie with illegal immigration: the Trump administration is watching, and they’re ready to drop the hammer.

So far, Newsom’s office is keeping quiet. No press releases, no impassioned Twitter threads about “compassion” and “equity.” Probably because they know what’s coming. DHS says this is “just the beginning,” and if that doesn’t make the sanctuary state crowd in Sacramento sweat, it should.

Because the American taxpayer is sick of this. Working people are footing the bill while Newsom and his pals hand out benefits like candy to people who aren’t even supposed to be here. The party might finally be over — and about time, too.

Do you think other sanctuary states should be worried about similar investigations?
