The race for Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District just took an unexpected twist, as independent candidate Thomas Bowman suspended his campaign and threw his support behind the Republican nominee, Joe Teirab. Bowman, who had been running as a constitutional conservative, claims he was initially recruited by Democrats to act as a “pawn” and split the conservative vote in favor of incumbent Democrat Rep. Bowman says he was recruited by the Patriots Run Project, a group that sought to place pro-Trump conservatives on the ballot as independents in key races across the country. While it may sound like a conservative initiative, an investigation by the Associated Press revealed that Democratic consulting firms and donors were actually behind the effort, allegedly to split the vote and help Democrats maintain control.
Bowman told the AP that he initially believed the arrangement was legitimate and even received nearly $20,000 for ballot access efforts. However, he changed his mind when he learned that one of the donors to his campaign, Elizabeth Steinglass, had also contributed to Rep. Craig’s re-election campaign. Steinglass and her husband have poured millions into Democratic campaigns over the years, and Bowman realized he may have been a tool to boost Craig’s chances.
Following his endorsement, Teirab praised Bowman for his decision to expose what he called “dirty tricks.” “Thomas is a true patriot for his willingness to boldly call out the dirty tricks that Angie Craig’s allies pulled in an attempt to interfere in the election,” Teirab said in a statement.
The Craig campaign, for its part, denies any involvement with Bowman’s candidacy or his recruitment. However, the Steinglass family and other prominent Democratic donors have also backed other candidates recruited by the Patriots Run Project, according to reports. While Bowman is the second candidate to drop out of this effort, his endorsement of Teirab has raised questions about the Patriots Run Project’s influence on races across the country.
