Senator J.D. Vance recently delivered a message that’s catching attention in Detroit, where he laid out his case for why Black voters, particularly in cities like Detroit, should consider backing him and Donald Trump. Vance, who represents Ohio but has gained a national profile as a vocal Trump supporter, focused on key issues that he says have been neglected by the Democratic Party, arguing that their promises to Black communities have been nothing but empty talk.
During a visit to Detroit, Vance addressed a room full of community leaders and local residents, emphasizing that while Democrats have had a stronghold on Black voters for decades, they have repeatedly failed to deliver on critical issues. “If you look at cities like Detroit, you can see that they’ve been under Democratic leadership for years, yet the problems remain the same. High crime, poor schools, and an economy that seems to forget about working-class Black Americans,” he said.
Vance made a point to discuss how policies promoted by Trump’s administration actually benefited Black Americans. He highlighted the *First Step Act*, which aimed at criminal justice reform and helped release thousands of nonviolent offenders, many of whom are Black. He also brought up Trump’s *Opportunity Zones*, which were designed to spur economic growth in disadvantaged areas, including many urban communities where Black Americans live. According to Vance, “Under Trump, we saw real action—policies that went beyond just talk. Opportunity Zones and criminal justice reform were steps in the right direction, and they had a measurable impact.”
He also tackled the issue of education, which resonates deeply in Detroit. Vance argued that Trump’s support for school choice would give Black families the power to decide where their children go to school, rather than being forced into failing public schools. “Every parent should have the right to choose the best education for their kids. The Democrats talk a big game, but they resist any real change that would give parents control,” he said.
On economic policy, Vance reminded the audience that Trump was able to bring record-low Black unemployment levels before the pandemic hit. He argued that Trump’s focus on bringing manufacturing back to the U.S. and cutting unnecessary regulations directly benefited working-class families, including Black families in Detroit who rely on those jobs.

Vance made his pitch not as a typical politician but as someone who believes that both he and Trump understand the struggles of working-class Americans. His direct appeal wasn’t just a plea for votes; it was a call to consider policies that aim to empower individuals rather than just feed them promises.
