Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) is sounding the alarm, and it’s not over climate change this time. The progressive congresswoman from New York is in full-blown panic mode after former ICE Director Tom Homan called for an investigation into whether she helped illegal immigrants evade immigration enforcement. Now, she’s frantically demanding answers from Attorney General Pam Bondi, fearing that the Department of Justice (DOJ) might actually be looking into her.
The controversy began when Homan, now known as America’s no-nonsense “Border Czar”, accused AOC of obstructing immigration enforcement. On February 13, 2025, he announced that he had formally asked the Deputy Attorney General to investigate whether her public efforts to “educate” illegal immigrants on how to avoid ICE agents crossed the legal line. Homan didn’t mince words, warning that AOC would be “in trouble now.”
During an interview with Laura Ingraham, Homan explained his concerns. “I sent an email today to the Deputy Attorney General. At what level is that impediment? Is that impeding our law enforcement efforts? If so, what are we going to do about it? Is she crossing the line?” he said.
The issue stems from AOC’s own admission that she was holding public webinars in New York City to teach illegal immigrants how to avoid ICE enforcement. While she insists this is about informing people of their rights, others—including Homan—argue that there’s a fine line between providing legal information and actively helping people evade law enforcement.
AOC’s letter to Bondi, sent on Thursday, reads like a defensive maneuver from someone who suspects the walls are closing in. She argues that Homan is attempting to “weaponize” the DOJ against her and accuses him of trying to intimidate elected officials. In the letter, she claims, “Mr. Homan’s repeated attempts to use your agency to politically intimidate duly elected officials are a textbook threat to the right to free speech.”
She also invokes the First Amendment, attempting to frame her actions as nothing more than an exercise in free speech. “Threatening criminal proceedings for exercising the First Amendment is itself a violation of the First Amendment,” she argues.

While AOC paints herself as a victim of political persecution, the question remains: did she cross the legal line? Teaching people about their rights is one thing, but if those efforts actively hinder law enforcement, the DOJ could have grounds to take a closer look.
For now, AOC has given the DOJ until March 5, 2025, to clarify whether she’s under investigation. If Homan’s instincts are correct, she might not like the answer.
