Popular Left-Wing Pundit Explains Why She Left Democratic Party

Ana Kasparian, a longtime co-host of The Young Turks and a progressive political commentator, has announced her departure from the Democratic Party, citing a deeply traumatic experience as a catalyst for her shift. Kasparian shared the revelation on the “Keeping It Real Podcast” with Jillian Michaels, herself a former Democrat who became disillusioned with the party after the pandemic.

Kasparian recounted a harrowing encounter with two homeless men while she was walking her dog in 2022. She explained how the situation quickly turned frightening. “It was not quite dark yet, but the sun was setting… I see these two guys… they seem kind of manic and their clothes were tattered… I’ve never had problems [with homeless people], so I didn’t think anything of it,” she shared. However, the situation escalated when Kasparian was sexually assaulted by the men. In the terrifying moment, she felt powerless to defend herself.

Following the incident, Kasparian bravely discussed her ordeal on The Young Turks. The reaction she received from some left-leaning listeners, however, added to her distress. She described receiving numerous messages accusing her of portraying homeless people in a negative light, with others branding her a racist. Kasparian remarked, “They were more upset with me for framing it that way than for the fact that I had been assaulted.”

Kasparian revealed that the backlash from her own political side forced her to confront issues within the left that she had previously overlooked. She noted, “And when they started accusing me of being racist, I’m like, ‘wait a minute, why are you assuming that the people who did this are..,’” suggesting that those who accused her were making assumptions about the race of her attackers. This experience, she said, “woke me up.”

Kasparian’s departure from the Democratic Party follows a series of criticisms she has made of the party in recent months. In April, she expressed frustration over education policies prioritizing diversity initiatives over academic performance, declaring, “Stop wasting taxpayer money and playing with these kids’ lives by engaging in your cutesy little culture war games.” She has also been vocal about what she perceives as a lack of accountability for President Biden’s cognitive health and a disturbing shift in the party’s foreign policy stance.

Kasparian’s move away from the Democratic Party is significant, given her prominent role in progressive media. Known for her fierce critiques of Republican policies, her shift reflects growing discontent within left-leaning circles over issues such as crime, social justice, and the party’s evolving priorities. As one of the progressive movement’s longtime voices, her departure from the party is bound to spark discussions about the direction and inclusiveness of today’s Democratic Party.
