Change is on the horizon for the Republican National Committee (RNC). Ronna McDaniel, the current chair, has announced her decision to step down. This move opens up a new chapter for the GOP, with former President Donald Trump endorsing Michael Whatley and Lara Trump for key positions.
On February 12, Trump threw his weight behind Michael Whatley, the North Carolina Republican Party’s chairman. Whatley is tipped to succeed McDaniel as the RNC chair. In addition to this, Lara Trump, who happens to be Trump’s daughter-in-law, has been endorsed by him for a co-chair position at the RNC.
Lara Trump made her intentions clear during her speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). She pledged her commitment to uphold early voting initiatives and ensure election integrity throughout her tenure as Co-Chair.
McDaniel publicly announced her resignation as RNC head on Monday. This information was confirmed by multiple sources.
McDaniel assumed the role of RNC Chair in 2017 with backing from former President Donald Trump. Despite facing backlash over a series of electoral losses under her leadership, she confirmed that she would officially step down on March 8.
In an NBC News report, McDaniel stated: “I have decided to step aside at our Spring Training on March 8 in Houston to allow our nominee to select a Chair of their choosing.”
“The RNC has historically undergone change once we have a nominee and it has always been my intention to honor that tradition.”
“I’m honored to have had the privilege to serve as RNC Co-Chair for this past year, as well as to have worked with so many grassroots leaders to help make our party successful. It’s what drives me,” added McKissick. “And of course being willing to put self aside for the sake of building a team and focusing on winning is a big part of being successful.”
McDaniel’s announcement comes after weeks of speculation and just a week after former President Trump suggested that it was time for a change at the RNC.
The GOP front-runner questioned on Newsmax whether McDaniel should step down after three straight election cycles of Republican underperformance.
“I think she knows that, I think she understands that,” responded Trump. “As far as me, as far as I’m concerned … almost 100% of the Republicans I endorse win. In the midterms, out of 253 endorsements, I won 222 races.”
