It’s a historic moment folks, as Argentine President Javier Milei and former U.S. President Donald Trump come together at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). This meeting is the climax of a year-long public admiration between these two influential leaders.
The event was held in Maryland, where both political heavyweights took to the stage. Trump, with his signature high-energy style, spoke about his ongoing presidential campaign. On the other hand, Milei deviated from his usual fiery rhetoric to deliver an hour-long discourse on economic theory. The meeting reportedly happened after Trump’s speech, where he acknowledged Milei as a “great gentleman” and a “fabulous guy.”
After their meeting, Milei posted a video on social media featuring both leaders. In this video, you can hear Trump endorsing Milei’s campaign slogan, “Make Argentina Great Again!”, while Milei responded with his own campaign motto: “¡Viva la libertad, carajo!” (English: “Long live liberty, damn it!”).
The Argentine newspaper Clarín gave an extensive report of this encounter which ended with both leaders sharing a warm embrace as the Village People’s “YMCA” played in the background. Milei expressed gratitude towards Trump for his “generous” support during his 2023 presidential campaign and praised him as a “great president”. He also expressed hope for Trump to return to the presidency.
Milei’s diplomatic approach with the Trump camp has been described by Clarín as “low profile”. Milei had a meeting with Secretary of State Antony Blinken a few days prior, aiming to avoid any perception of undue intervention in the 2024 election.
Prior to his political career, Milei was a TV commentator and podcaster who openly supported Trump. In an interview with Tucker Carlson in September, Milei praised Trump as one of the few who understood that wealth generation comes from the private sector and that the real battle is against socialism and statism.
“He called me right after he won. He called me to thank me,” recounted Trump. “He’s got everything. He called me the night he won the election and he thanked me profusely. It’s called ‘Make Argentina Great Again.’ He’s got MAGA hats.”
During his CPAC speech, Trump praised Milei, referring to him as part of a “tremendous group of dignitaries” at the event.
“He’s gotten a lot, he’s a great gentleman. You know he’s MAGA, ‘Make Argentina Great Again,’” Trump humorously noted.
“Let’s assume we are at the moment when we used candles for light and [New Jersey inventor Thomas] Edison hadn’t arrived yet. Obviously, in the moment that Edison appears with his little lamp, all the chandlers go out of business. Naturally, if we had listened to the interventionists, today, instead of having this beautiful conference with all these lights, we’d still be using candles. This is how socialists ruin our lives.” – Javier Milei
Milei continued his discourse by denouncing social justice and the pro-abortion lobby after an extended discussion on economic theory.
From there, Milei urged the audience to persistently fight against socialism, highlighting the consequences suffered by his home country due to these “stupid ideas”.
“From being one of the most affluent countries in the world, we are now ranked 140. Therefore, don’t surrender your fight for liberty because if you don’t fight for your liberty, they will drag you into misery,” he concluded.
