Sheinbaum made the announcement Monday morning, just hours before Trump’s tariffs were set to go into effect. The deal? Mexico sends troops to crack down on illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking, and in return, the U.S. agrees to delay the tariffs for one month while negotiations take place. It’s a simple trade—do your job, and we’ll talk business.
Trump, never one to back down from a negotiation, confirmed the agreement on Truth Social. He described his conversation with Sheinbaum as “very friendly” and laid out the details:

Notice something? Trump is doing what Biden never could—getting Mexico to take responsibility for the crisis on the border. Under Biden, Mexico had no incentive to cooperate. But under Trump, the tariffs are real, the consequences are real, and guess what? Suddenly, Mexico is sending troops.
This also signals a major shift in U.S.-Mexico relations. Trump and Sheinbaum aren’t just talking about border security; they’re opening discussions on wider trade and security issues. Trump named Marco Rubio as the lead negotiator on behalf of the U.S., alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Expect some serious America First policies to come out of those negotiations.
Meanwhile, Canada is acting like a petulant child. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, instead of engaging in real negotiations, threw a tantrum and told Canadians to “buy Canada” in response to Trump’s tariffs. Good luck with that, Justin. Unlike Mexico, Canada seems more interested in virtue signaling than actually protecting its economy.
